2013 South Bay Dozen

Torrance Beach, California - Saturday, July 6th, 2012

The South Bay Dozen is a one-day event that aims to encourage community, health, philanthropy, and fun by way of ocean racing.

The event functions as a joint venture between Hennessey’s and The Jimmy Miller Foundation, with the support of participating sponsors.

  • 7 am - Registration opens for all competitors.
  • 8 am - Competitor meeting, outlining day’s events.
  • Event 1 - 5k SUP/ Paddleboard
  • Event 2 - 3-Lap Dory Race #1
  • Event 3 - 500m Ocean Swim
  • Event 4 - Sprint Surf-Ski
  • Event 5 - SUP 2-Lap Surf Sprint
  • Event 6 - 3-Lap Dory Race #2
  • Event 7 - Sprint Paddleboard
  • Event 8 - 2-man Waterman’s Relay (dory, swim, board, dory)
  • 1 pm - Intermission - JMMF Presentation.
  • Event 9 - Run-Swim-Run
  • Event 10 - Iron-man
  • Event 11 - Taplin Relay(swim, board, ski, run)
  • Event 12 - Mixed Board Relay(2 male, 1 female)
  • 4 pm - Prize-giving at Mickey Finnz


All participants will be awarded raffle tickets upon finishing any race. Top 10 finishers will be awarded additional raffle tickets according to place of finish. Twelve grand prize awards (each with retail value of $200-$600) will be awarded and distributed to twelve “winners” selected by lottery at the prize-giving festivities. Prize money will be allotted to the events top 5 men and top 3 women as scored by overall points. Prize money will also given to top 3 men and top 2 women of the 5 K stock SUP/ Paddleboard race.

South Bay Dozen Rules & Description of Events

Competitors can register by beach entry only, beginning at 7 am on day of the event. Competitors may register at any point in the day, up until the start of the day’s final event. The entry fee is $40 for all open competitors, and $30 for all juniors (17 & under). The single entry fee allows for participation in as many of the day’s races as the competitor wishes to partake in. Top five overall men and top three women will be awarded prize money.


All race finishers will be eligible for a dozen sick grand prizes. Prizes include surfboards, wetsuits, paddles, sunglasses, and heaps of quality apparel. Prizes provided by Bark, Quiksilver, Body Glove, Hobie Polarized, Quick Blade, Ocean Paddle Sports and Patagonia among others.
